Equipment
Field hockey is a popular team sport that is played with sticks and a ball on an astro turf field. If you're new to the game, you'll need to purchase some basic equipment before you hit the field. Here's a list of items that every new field hockey player should consider buying:
Stick: A field hockey stick is an essential piece of equipment for any player. It's made up of a handle and a head, and is used to pass, shoot, and control the ball. When choosing a stick, consider the length and weight of the handle, as well as the shape and curvature of the head. It's generally recommended that beginners start with a shorter and lighter stick, as it will be easier to handle and control.
Ball: Field hockey balls are typically made of hard plastic and are about the size of a tennis ball. They are usually white or orange in color, and have a smooth, shiny surface. Make sure to purchase a ball that meets the official size and weight specifications for the game.
Shoes: Field hockey is played on astro turf, so it's important to wear shoes that provide good traction and support. Look for shoes with a flat, rubber sole and a sturdy upper to help you move quickly and safely on the field. Avoid shoes with metal spikes or cleats, as they are not allowed in field hockey.
Shin pads: Shin pads are worn to protect your legs from the impact of sticks and balls. They are made of lightweight foam or plastic, and are worn under your socks. Look for shin guards that are comfortable and provide adequate protection, but aren't too bulky or cumbersome.
Gum shield: A gum shield is a protective device that is worn in the mouth to protect your teeth and gums. It's important to wear a gum shield while playing field hockey to prevent dental injuries. Look for a gum shield that fits well and is comfortable to wear.
